The EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy: Challenges Related to the War in Ukraine
The Jean Monnet Module “The EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy: challenges related to the War in Ukraine” (ESEDEP) aims to develop and teach a training course for students of the “International Relations” programme at Petro Mohyla Black Sea National University, with the goal of developing students as pro-European specialists in international conflict management, preventive diplomacy and international communications. At the same time, the Module includes scientific research of the functional role of the EU in the international space and the dissemination of knowledge about the EU in the academic environment, the public sector, and Ukrainian society in general.
Relevance of the Module
- Promoting excellence in teaching and research in the field of European Union studies in the Ukrainian higher education system.
- Generating knowledge in support of EU security policy and strengthening the role of the EU in a globalized world.
- Activating Ukraine’s strategy of European integration and engaging educational institutions in it.
- Promoting the development of the education system to popularize the idea of a united Europe for Peace, knowledge about the EU in Ukrainian society, and bringing the EU closer to the Ukrainian public space.
- Cooperation of higher education institutions and other institutions that actively promote Ukraine’s integration into the European security space.
- Creating a scientific and educational network of Ukrainian and European scholars with experience in studying and researching the EU (European Studies).
Objectives of ESEDEP
- Raising awareness of the target audience about EU Common Security and Defence Policy and diplomacy in the field of military conflict resolution, international conflict management and preventive diplomacy.
- Educating pro-European specialists in the field of international diplomacy, increasing their career prospects by providing them with specialized knowledge of EU foreign policy and diplomacy in the course of building a system of international peace.
- Launching an active public discussion on the implementation of European standards for peacekeeping at the local, regional and national levels of government in Ukraine.
- Engaging the academic community, civil society, local governments and institutions interested in developing Ukraine’s future security strategy.
- Drawing the attention of the academic community, authorities and the public sector to the prevention and constructive resolution of military conflicts through webinars, conferences, roundtables and publications.
Project Structure
Educational and Scientific Part
Introduction of the Training Course, student theses on European Security, publication of scientific articles, presentation of research results at conferences, a collective monograph, and an international scientific conference.
Events and Dissemination
Webinars, public presentation of the collective monograph, roundtable discussions with authorities, NGOs, media and researchers, and dissemination through the project’s website and social networks.
